Veganuary – Where to head in the Chilterns

Taking part in “Veganuary” this year? Or perhaps you’re just trying to reduce the amount of meat and dairy you eat? Well, to help out we’ve asked our friends The Three Vegan Sisters to come up with a list of a few places they’ve visited recently in and around the Chilterns that really are putting plant-based dishes at the heart of their menus….

1. The Pantry, Hazlemere
The vegan breakfast here is everything you could wish for on a plate, some may even call it epic! (Trust me, even if you’re not a vegan, I promise you will love it!).
It’s a breakfast of champions consisting of sourdough toast topped with avocado, mushrooms, sweet potato, spinach, kale, hash browns and tomatoes. You’ll be full up till way past lunch and if you’re anything like us you’ll grab a sweet treat to take home for later.

2. Wild Strawberry Cafe, Prestwood, Great Missenden.
They are closed during January but do pop in once they re-open in February as they have hugely expanded their vegan offering in the past year. Plant-based dishes are at the heart of this cafe and even on the main menu! The pancakes are a delicious start to the day and the Buddha bowl from the lunch menu will not disappoint. They always have vegan cake on offer (just make sure you ask if you’re not sure) and lots of milk options for your tea and coffee. Make sure you pop into the Farm Shop too for beautiful seasonal fruit and veg as well as lots of local exciting vegan finds!

3. Began’s, High Wycombe Market, Fridays only.
This food truck is a little gem! Tucked on the high street in the heart of the town centre every Friday they serve up homemade tasty vegan treats all from their beautiful food truck ‘Beatrix’.
Particular favourites are their homemade seitan, the ‘oh so crispy’ popcorn tofu (if they ever bring it back hint hint!) and the mighty salad box, which is new to the menu this January.

4. The Bell, Aston Clinton.
This is a family favourite, if you’re looking for somewhere for Sunday lunch this pub is perfect. Get yourself to Wendover Woods for a walk before to work up an appetite (you’ll need it) and make sure you have room to feast! With great choices for starters, mains and desserts there’s something for everyone and you won’t feel like you’re missing out!

5. Metro Lounge, Amersham.
This quirky restaurant/cafe is situated in the heart of Amersham with so many options for vegans you won’t know what to choose and we’re certain you’ll be coming back more than once!
Fancy something light, try the tapas boards, brunch (which is served all day, we’re partial to the “vegan bacon butty”) or if you’re anything like us you’ll be swayed by the Vegan Pulled Jackfruit Burger.

6. Lata Lata, High Wycombe.
Visiting Lata Lata is like going to a trendy bar on holiday (that happens to serve some of the most delicious dishes we’ve ever had). Tapas style dishes make it easy to order as you go and they’re happy to swap things up to make dishes vegan (if they aren’t already!). The staff are so friendly and helpful you’ll be arranging your next visit before you’ve finished your first! Particular highlights are the chargrilled broccoli, with garlic and lemon oil, the patatas bravas (make sure you ask for the vegan version) and the white bean stew.

7. The Green Grocer, Amersham
Originally the Grocer at 91, last year they changed the café to a vegetarian and vegan café only. Don’t be fooled by the menu, it looks like there is only one vegan choice, but there is plenty more. Speak to the staff and they can adapt and amend dishes to your specification. We love the mushrooms on toast served with one of their fresh juices!

8. The Royal Oak, Marlow.
We love this pub and they’ve really invested in their vegan menu over the last 12 months or so. Find yourself a little spot next to a log fire, bring a book (or even better a friend so you can share a bottle of wine) and prepare to indulge yourself! They change their menu seasonally but if you get there quick enough, we recommend the Ribollita (a real hearty bread soup), the Chiltern rapeseed oil mash and triple cooked fat chips! Make sure you leave enough room for puddings as they really have gone all out and you can even have crumble with almond milk custard!

If you fancy going a little further out, we really recommend Happy Friday Kitchen (in Oxford), Dou Dou in Kentish town (a vegan Chinese/Thai buffet!! Is this for real!), Mildreds (all across London) and V Burger in Camden when nothing else hits the spot but a big burger!
